DPRTE – lots to learn, lots to see and lots of interesting people to meet. The biggest challenge, fitting it all in, in 1 day!

There were so many great presentations on the agenda, I challenge all the innovators out there, please design a cloning machine.

So out of everything, here’s what made it great for me:

Deborah Haynes, Security and Defence Editor at Sky News. Having run a Wargame with her team in April last year, war felt distant. Now, wind the clock forward, it’s a whole different ball game! And, she knows first-hand how that feels, she was on the ground in Kyiv in early 2022!

What I loved about her talk, was her passion, her ‘no holds barred’ honesty, and her directness about our ‘false impression of a protective shield’. She really was a prime example of how to gauge public mood.

MOD Keynote – Developments within International Collaboration and Exports (IC&E) – an inflection point for defence, hosted by Katharine Costelloe and Kitty Jenkins.

With exports key on the agenda for many SMEs, it is great to hear that investment, and resources are coming together and you are openly looking for involvement from industry.

To hear from Harrison Talbot-Brown and Dr Graham Hoare on the UK Ministry of Defence and High Value Manufacturing Catapult Alliance – Strengthening the UK Defence Industrial Base. I think this is a great start from an innovation space, but does it miss out strengthening the existing supply chains with SMEs, the involvement of academia and incentivising that from government?

Great to meet Sean Wheatley from Zebra Technology Corp. Also great to spend time with Shaun Elmstrom MCGI CISM, Barry Zielinski, Adele Parker (McNally Parker) and Andrew Emmett from Telent Technology Services Ltd, Mark Eastwood from M Group, Phill Berkley from Day 1 People, David Barrone, Douglas Deacon, Stephen Buckley MBA CMgr MCMI, John Rowse and Tom Rowse, CMSE®, Patrick McQueen PGDip MIIRSM, Paddy Osmond, Didde B., Victoria Chapman and DHL.

Natalie Maddox-Hussain – let’s talk about getting Women Empowering Defence CIC at a South West Regional Defence & Security Cluster event!

Also, sometimes you make a choice, and the discussion isn’t right for you. Mental note for next time, don’t sit yourself slap bang in the middle of an aisle!
